In early January of 2020, Samten and I climbed Mt. Baiyun (White Cloud Mountain) to photograph the Banqiao Reservoir near the source of the Ru River in Henan province. I had learned about the 1975 collapse of the old Banqiao Reservoir dam and wanted to photograph the location, not only in memory of those that lost their lives as a result but also appreciating the event to have been the impetus for upgrading reservoir dams throughout China. Two previous climbs up Mt. Baiyun were too shrouded in clouds to reveal the reservoir (the mountain was living up to its name). It seems fitting that the clouds parted (just barely) on the January 2020 visit, as China was just about to confront another major challenge at the confluence of nature and humankind.
